The antibacterial properties of silver have been known for thousands of years. Silver is commonly used, for example, in hospitals and other facilities requiring special hygiene to combat bacteria in textiles and furniture. What is the basis for silver's bacteria-killing, antimicrobial property?
Textile engineer Matteo Vallarsa, who has been a partner of Medanta since 2017, is a pioneer in the textile industry who is constantly exploring innovations and new sustainable production methods. In addition to Medanta, Matteo Vallarsa collaborates with top international brands such as Hugo Boss, Armani, Diesel, and Benetton.
We asked Matteo why and how silver kills bacteria. "Silver ions kill bacteria by puncturing holes in the cell membranes of the bacteria. The efficacy of silver ions has a triple effect," says Matteo Vallarsa.
He summarized the answer in three main points:
- Silver ions inhibit the function of enzymes that transport oxygen.
- Silver ions inactivate sulfur-containing proteins and prevent the growth of malodorous bacteria.
- Silver ions lock the bacterial cells.
The use of silver in textiles also has other benefits, as an antibacterially treated garment can also speed up wound healing. Medanta has conducted research and development work on this together with University of Helsinki professor of microbiology Per Saris.
In which products does Medanta use silver treatment?
Medanta utilizes antimicrobial silver treatment in workwear as well as in patient clothing that uses Medanta's own materials. The treatment increases the health safety and comfort of employees, as antimicrobial-treated textiles do not provide a growth medium for microbes and eliminate unwanted odors.
